The ancient technique of wax carving and casting for jewellery is a wonderful, easy and inexpensive method that allows you to create intricate pieces of jewellery from home with just a small set up that fits into a shoe box!
In this introductory class, students will receive a starter kit with the basics you need to continue your jewellery making journey at home, plus a comprehensive list of local and online suppliers.
You will learn the basics of wax work to create at least 3 rings, however the skills acquired in this course will open the possibilities for you to create many other designs, limited only by your imagination.
This is a 2-day class as the wax models created in class will be sent off to a casting facility so we can clean, polish and finish on day 2 of the course.
Topics Day 1 (3 hours)
- Introduction and types of wax
-Using the handsaw and changing blades
-Measuring and design
-Filing and shaping techniques
-Finishing and preparing to cast
-Weighting and pricing. Mathematical formulas to estimate casting cost on sterling silver or gold
Topics Day 2 (2 hours)
- Filing, sanding and polishing
Casting fee $5 + cost of metal
The final price of cast and completed piece will be $20-$30 depending on design, size and weight.
-You will be instructed on how to create cost-effective designs to minimize casting fees as much as possible.
-Students will have at least 1 piece of jewellery ready plus a home kit with enough material to continue working from home.
